Trump Undermines CDC

Four former heads of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today implicitly rebuked President Donald Trump, arguing the “extraordinary” efforts by him and other administration officials to diminish the public health agency’s guidance was contributing to a resurgence of coronavirus cases across the United States.

Coronavirus cases soared by more than a million globally in just five days as the numbers continue to accelerate from week to week, according to figures from Johns Hopkins University. Reported cases increased by 1,046,200 from July 6 through July 10, up from a 994,400 increase over the five days from July 5 through July 9. Trump Pressures to Open Schools

President Donald Trump plans to put pressure on schools to reopen for in-person instruction in the fall.

Six groups representing educators and parents said "[The administration has] failed to listen to families and public school educators who have been on the front lines serving their communities. This vacuum of leadership leaves this administration with zero credibility in the minds of educators and parents when it comes to this major decision."

Trump, during a Tuesday forum at the White House, said the administration was going to pressure governors and other officials to "open the schools" in a "very important" move for the country and the well-being of students and parents. The administration will be putting on "a lot of pressure," he said.

On Wednesday, Trump upped the ante for schools to reopen, posting on Twitter that he "may cut off funding" if they don't. As far as the CDC guidelines are concerned, he said he disagreed with their "very tough and expensive" recommendations, saying they're asking schools to do "very impractical things."

This Man Is Dangerous

excerpt from Cuomo Prime Time   07/06/2020
Chris Cuomo with Keisha Lance Bottoms, mayor of Atlanta, GA

CUOMO: What is your response to the President saying, "Here - here's the good news, Mayor. 99 percent of the cases are harmless. And Confederate Flag, I have no position."

BOTTOMS: Chris, I try not to give any energy to him, because it is energy that I will never get back. That being said, he - each time he opens his mouth, he reminds us of how bad he is for this country. This is the reason that we all need to show up and vote in November.

This man is dangerous. This virus is spreading across this country, and he refuses to do anything, on behalf of the nation, to make it stop. He is a danger to all of us. And that doesn't have anything to do with Party affiliation.

And so, you know, what - what can you expect? To expect something different from him is like insanity.

And I just refuse to keep giving him that energy. I'm going to put my energy into electing a decent man, in November, and that person is Joe Biden.

Wartime President in Retreat

NBC News White House correspondent Peter Alexander:

“I'm struck by the clips you played earlier in the broadcast of those Republican governors in states who have had to reverse their reopenings or halt them all together. You'll remember in the early stages of this pandemic the president sort of cast himself as a wartime president. That we were fighting a war here. If he's the commander, in effect, these Republican governors in states like Arizona, Florida and Texas are his generals. And right now they are in retreat.

“As it relates to the president, you're sort of seeing the different stages of grief. You've seen denial, you've seen anger and now it appears you're going to be seeing more acceptance. White House officials telling us that they will focus on this sort of acknowledgement, this recognition that the virus is not going to be going away. Certainly not before the election. The challenge is whether they can communicate that message that we have to learn to live with it given the fact that from the president, this last week, as you've noted, he said he hopes it's just going to disappear. And in recent days he said he believes it is under control and, quote, being handled.”

The Lincoln Project

From their webpage:

Mr. Trump fails to meet the bar for this commitment. He has neither the moral compass nor the temperament to serve. His vision is limited to what immediately faces him — the problems and risks he chronically brings upon himself and for which others, from countless contractors and companies to the American people, ultimately bear the heaviest burden.

But this president’s actions are possible only with the craven acquiescence of congressional Republicans. They have done no less than abdicate their Article I responsibilities. Congressional Republicans have embraced and copied Mr. Trump’s cruelty and defended and even adopted his corruption. Mr. Trump and his enablers have abandoned conservatism and longstanding Republican principles and replaced it with Trumpism, an empty faith led by a bogus prophet.
